Alice Sebold talked about lovely bones at a book event after the movie was released, saying that she wrote this fictional book based on one of her own experiences. Unlike Susie, however, Alice Sebold was able to identify her rapist and murderer and see him convicted and imprisoned.

Alice Sebold talked about coming up with the story idea when she was learning what happened to other women who had been sexually assaulted or suffered from domestic violence. She said that many of these women did not come forward because they either did not think they would be believed or because the men who assaulted them had more power and authority than they did.

While Alice Sebold was walking through a park one day, she realized that everyone is connected in some way. In this story, Susie’s spirit visits her family and friends after she passes away to show how closely all of us are connected.
