Citra Single Hop IPA Review

This Marks & Spencer Single Hop Citra IPA is an English India Pale Ale (IPA) style beer brewed by Oakham Ale in Cambridgeshire. Using a single variety American hop it arrived in the UK in 2009. It weighs in at an impressive 4.9% vol. M&S reckon it’s perfect with a curry which is good news to everyone here at FLS!

What’s In It

Single hop beer using the Citra hop. This was an American hop that Oakham has brought across to the UK and seems to be generating great interest.

Tastes Like

Hoppy, but you’d expect this from a single hop beer.  The Citra is a little bitter as a hop, so the taste comes across accordingly. Citrus aroma is evident at first, but soon fade as the hoppiness kicks in.  The brewery suggests this as ‘bursting with citrus and tropical hop flavours and sensationally refreshing’. Offering notes of powerful Grapefruit, Lychee and also Gooseberry aromas, this is a friendly blend.

Beer Enjoyment Score Total

This is a decent beer with a pleasant kick thanks to the 4.9% gravity. When poured the head is a nice, thin head which doesn’t hang around long. A refreshing drink, ideal for having with a curry or a burger. We score this an enjoyable 7 out of 10 and day of the week.

We’ve already placed an order here for Oakham Ales Citra Beer – Pack Size = 24x330ml, which is from the same brewery and uses the same hop. Although not the same ale as we reviewed, this looked too good a deal to pass by.
